  1. maniacsicko says:

his voice and laugh sounds very much like Jeremy Irons

  2. Pure, unintelligible gobble-d-gook. That’s why the West, under Christianity rose up so much further and faster than the East.Christianity actually makes sense, unlike the gibberish on the video.

  3. agnophilo says:

    @maniacsicko – I can see that, lol.

  4. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Actually it makes perfect sense if, as I prefaced the video, you are familiar with these philosophies and know what they are talking about when they say things like “god”.  It is gibberish if you assume they mean yahweh out of ignorance.

  5. @agnophilo – I am familiar with the East because I lived in an ashram. What I am saying is that Eastern religions are complete baloney. And that’s why Eastern cultures are so impoverished. Eastern religious teachings are why life is so cheap there.

  6. TheBillion says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Hindu or buddhist ashram? for how long? being taught what, exactly?

  7. i like alan watts….the book is a good read.

  8. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – The entire continent of asia is not “impoverished”, and many predominantly christian countries are in the third world.  Economics is a bit more complicated than that.  And I agree about eastern religions.  I’m talking about the westernized version of eastern philosophy.@tendollar4ways – The book?  And yeah, I love his lectures.

  9. it is called the book.

  10. agnophilo says:

@tendollar4ways – Ah, yes.  Did not know that, thanks.

  11. dirtbubble says:

I read a couple of books by Watts and found him very accessible. That was his mission, to bridge a gap of understanding. Otherwise he’s just another pompous expert like the rest of us. Those who find Watts interesting will be well-advised to contemplate the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, which take far less than ten minutes to read. Thanks for sharing this.

  12. @agnophilo – There is no comparison between Latin poverty and Asian poverty. If it hadn’t been for the Brits and the Americans bringing Western Civilization to India they’d still be dying like flies.China was so desperate that it instituted a 1 child policy that’s going to have devastating effects when there aren’t enough people left to replace the older generations.Even the poorest nations of the West are far better off than the East.

  13. agnophilo says:

@dirtbubble – : )  Here’s my favorite copy of the tao also, if you’ve never read it.@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Again, writing off a third of the planet dozens of countries with non-comparable economic and cultural situations as if they were identical because they are not like your country.

  14. @TheBillion – Hindu. We were taught the ancient techniques of meditation called Knowledge: light, harmony, the Word and divine nectar. It was all a crock.

  15. @agnophilo – I didn’t write anyone off. I just said that if it weren’t for the Christian West, the East would be neck deep in the dead bodies of people who’d either been mass murdered or starved to death.

  16. TheBillion says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – How did they explain the “soteriology” of Knowledge to students? What part of India? Was the population of the ashram mostly Westerners or mixed? Just curious, I’ve never spoken with anyone who was in an overseas ashram before.

  17. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – While meditation probably has an effect (as does prayer to a false god or any placebo) eastern religions are a crock – the philosophy is not.

  18. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – So the west hasn’t experienced starvation or committed acts of genocide?  And china invented paper and printing, which made possible mass-education, modern science and generally most of the advancement we’ve seen in the past few hundred years.

  19. @agnophilo – Religion and philosophy go hand in hand. Eastern religion and Eastern philosophy are a crock. The West rules.

  20. @agnophilo – Mass murder in the West only took place by atheist regimes. And the West has never experienced starvation like the Orient, that is unless it was used by atheists as  a policy to commit mass murder (Hitler, Stalin, Mao).

  21. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace -You speak from a position of closed-minded ignorance.  And no, religion and philosophy, while they may occasionally overlap, are not the same thing.@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Hitler was an outspoken catholic and never suggested he was an atheist, and his soldiers swore religious oaths, had christian military chaplains etc you ignorant bigotted fuck.  Stalin and mao as far as I know never said what they believed about god, the afterlife etc and over 25,000 new christian churches were built under stalin’s regime in soviet russia.  He alternately persecuted and promoted the christian churches depending on how he thought it would affect communism.  The lie that these men were atheists is vile and built out of bigotry and hatred, and would not even be a valid argument if it were true, which is why atheists (not generally being hateful bigots) never use or need to use hitler’s catholicism as an attack on catholics or christians. Moreover the idea that mass murder has never taken place in the west except by atheists is just insane.  Even ignoring the christian theocracies, dark ages, crusades, inquisition etc, you live on a continent that was systematically and almost entirely eradicated of all indigenous human life by christian settlers to make room for their african slaves.  You might as well claim christians have never persecuted gays or jews or oppressed women.

  22. YouToMe says:

Good comments here and interesting dialogue. @agnophilo –  I would also like to know more about the ashram bc ive never known one who had studied there. I agree with Mark re: atrocities by so-called Christians in God’s name. Atheists are not subhuman I am Christian, but the crusades, slavery in our own country and discrimination against blacks, Hispanic immigrants, and gays recently is not Christlike at all- but ppl twist scripture to justify evil acts all the time.

  23. YouToMe says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - . Sorry. My last comment was directed at you re: the ashram

  24. @agnophilo – Hitler was not an outspoken Catholic. Catholics were sent to the camps the same as Jews.

  25. @TheBillion – The doctrine was devotion to the Satguru through satsang, meditation and service.  Satsang means the company of truth and mainly consists of devotees meeting everyday to tell their experience of discipleship.Life is leela, a divine play. Life for man is a passing illusion. Strawberry fields forever and all that crap.

  26. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Yes he most certainly was.  From mein kamf:”Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.””As long as leadership from above was not lacking, the people fulfilled their duty and obligation overwhelmingly. Whether Protestant pastor or Catholic priest, both together and particularly at the first flare, there really existed in both camps but a single holy German Reich, for whose existence and future each man turned to his own heaven.””It may be that today gold has become the exclusive ruler of life, but the time will come when man will again bow down before a higher god.”Etc, etc, eeeeetttttcccc…  A quick google search will find hundreds of quotes from hitler’s writings and speeches about his religious views and while yes, catholics were too persecuted in the end, that was when the hitler youth were being deliberately massacred and german food stocks deliberately destroyed.  He knew he was losing the war and was trying to take as much of germany with him as he could.

  27. @agnophilo – That piece of propaganda you quoted has nothing to do with Hitler being a Catholic. He is simply using religion to justify his hatred.

  28. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Okay, so quote him saying god doesn’t exist.  I gave pictures of him signing autographs for catholic clergy, leaving church, religious propaganda and quotes from his writings.  And by the way even if he was a “fake” catholic and “secret” atheist, hindu, whatever the hell, it still debunks the idea that nazi germany was atheistic.

  29. @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – just as you are using the same to justify yours.

  30. @agnophilo – Hitler believed in the philosophy of Neitzche which proclaimed, “God is dead.”Also, look at Hitler’s actions. Actions speak louder than words.Further, a person cannot be Catholic and hate Jews.  Pope Pius XII proclaimed Israel, God’s first born son and that Catholics must love the Jews.

  31. @complicatedlight – My use of religion is proper. I am not using it to justify a lie.

  32. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Again, quote him.I gave you literally every possible form of historical evidence to support my claim, offer any to support your claim that he was an atheist.

  33. @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – i’m sure hitler felt exactly the same way.

  34. @complicatedlight – Hitler was a maniac. His feelings are not important.

  35. @agnophilo – All you did was misuse a quote. Hitler didn’t say he was Catholic at all. He said he was righteous like religion was. Also, you seem oblivious to actual history: words vs action.Hitler hated the Jews and the Catholics. The Catholics, led by Pope Pius XII assisted Jews in escaping the clutches of the evil NAZIs.Also you made the grievous error of transferring Germany’s Christianity to Hitler.  Such thinking is truly fascist and Hitlerian.  For it is the people who define the culture, not the government or the leader.Hitler was an atheist.  Germany was Christian. There is no contradiction there. And that Hitler had to make himself look Christian is understandable too.

  36. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – He’s just a maniac and his views are irrelevant when he’s catholic, but his views are all-important when he’s an atheist. In reality you are right (at last).  He was a psychopath first, and whatever else he was second.  And his views no more reflect on those of ordinary catholics than they would reflect on ordinary atheists if he were one.

  37. @agnophilo – Hitler was atheist not Catholic. So it doesn’t make any sense to speculate otherwise. He was a maniac. We know that because of his actions.

  38. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – “I am now, as before, a Catholic and will always remain so.” – Adolf Hitler, as quoted in the diary of nazi general Gerhart EngelAnd no, I did not “just” misuse a quote.  I gave several quotes and told you you can easily find hundreds more, and gave photographic evidence of his religion you dishonest sleaze. And so germany was christian, hitler had to “pretend” to be christian to stay in power, and yet all of the atrocities committed by the nazis were atheist atrocities.  Bearing in mind that you have yet to provide any evidence that hitler was an atheist.

  39. agnophilo says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Quote him saying there is no god or shut the fuck up.

  40. @agnophilo – Your demand for a quote is simply a refusal to believe the truth about the hell that atheism brings to earth.Additionally, you don’t get to define the terms of reality by making childish demands. A quote is unnecessary and asking for one indicates that you have zero understanding of the difference between atheism and Christianity.Atheists, not Christians slaughtered 100,000,000 innocent people as a matter of policy during the 20th century.Christianity, on the other hand, has allowed man to develop from a heathen barbarian to a highly civilized creature.

  41. @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – damn. i would have pleaded the fifth in your position, but you waltzed right off the cliff.

  42. @complicatedlight – It’s hard for atheists and liberals to make sense out of simplicity. There are no cliffs and there is no one walking anywhere and the fifth amendment is used in the courtroom. What a topsy turvy hallucination you live in.

  43. @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – oh, and regarding your inane and endless rebuttals to mark, who pwnd you about seventy comments ago, if “christianity…has allowed man to develop from a heathen barbarian to a highly civilized creature.”… clearly it didn’t do so well with all the womenfolk. you got the creature part right, though. +5

  44. An absolute pleasure to hear the man speak and an absolute pleasure to see some understand!

Speak yer mind.
