Conservative Media Promoting Conspiracy Theories.

I was thinking the other day about how the fringe conspiracy theory garbage is so mainstream in the republican/conservative movement, and figured I would see how much of the blame for that nonsense actually sticks to fox news and the republican party directly.

Whacked out conspiracy theory #1: Obama is or “might be” the anti-christ:

“Anointed one” is a biblical reference to the antichrist, and it is one of the favorite titles for obama by the right.  “Anointed” and “obama” appear on the same page on the fox news website over six hundred times, many of them from transcripts from their primetime shows.  And who could forget this mccain tv ad with barely veiled references to the anti-christ and the “left behind” book series.  So in this instance the mainstream is actively promoting the conspiracy theory.

Whacked out conspiracy theory #2: Obama isn’t a US citizen:

This time there are well over a thousand references to “birth certificate” and “obama” on the fox news website, and most of of the ones I see seem to be suggesting something sinister.  For those who don’t know, obama released his birth certificate during the campaign immediately upon request, this is a non-story.

Whacked out conspiracy theory #3: Obama is not christian, or is a “secret muslim”:

Obama’s gone to church for the last few decades, I think that solidifies him as some sort of christian or other.  But fox news, limbaugh etc continously insinuate he isn’t christian and this conspiracy theory likely originated with fox news which repeated the claim that obama was raised muslim and attended a “madrassa”.  Madrassa, which to western ears sounds like “muslim terrorist training camp” is actually just the arabic word for “school” and does not imply that the school is religious or secular.  They just use the arabic word to make it sound foreign and sinister and scary to their viewers.

Most of the time though they just talk about obama and islam together in a “wink wink” sort of way.  I mean bush invaded two muslim countries and had an administration more than twice as long as the current president, yet the words bush and islam only appear on the same page on the fox news website a little over a thousand times (link).  But obama and islam appear on the same page on the fox news website almost seven thousand times.  “Bush” and “muslim” appear on the same page about 2500 times (link), but obama and muslim appear about 8500 times

A conservative website polled their members and asked who the most important, influential conservative pundits were.  These are the results:

  • Rush Limbaugh: 41%

Refers to the president as “Imam Obama”.  No further comment really needed there.

  • Glenn Beck: 33%

Suggested on his tv show that Michelle Obama went to spain so she could visit a famous mosque and deliver “secret” messages to muslims.

  • Charles Krauthammer: 29%

As far as I can tell he’s been silent on the issue.

  • Bill O’Reilly: 24%

Insists repeatedly that obama is a secret atheist.

  • Sean Hannity: 21%

One of the worst offenders in terms of veiled antichrist references, also twists any comment obama makes about islam into an anti-christian/pro-muslim statement, like turning his observation that we have one of the largest muslim populations in the world into “we are no longer a christian nation, but a muslim nation” etc.  Tons of veiled bullshit, look it up.

  • Newt Gingrich: 16%

Characterized obama defending the rights of muslims to build a mosque in new york as “pandering to radical Islam.”

  • Michelle Malkin: 16%

Insinuated that obama was somehow siding with muslims over christians because a statement acknowledged that both muslims and christians were injured in a suicide bombing (link).

  • Mike Huckabee: 13%

The only one I can find on the list so far that actually spoke out against the “obama is a muslim” conspiracy theories.  Kudos huckabee.

  • Ann Coulter: 13%

Refers to him as “president Hussein” and “B. Hussein Obama”, and recently at CPAC (the big conservative conference where all the republican presidential hopefuls give speeches) she said he should look into becoming president of egypt because there they won’t mind him being a muslim.  (This and other accusations about his birth certificate were applause lines).  These comments were after she wrote an article entitled “obama is not a muslim” bashing him as an atheist.  So the award for two-faced racist hypocrite goes to…

  • George Will: 13%

Can’t find anything from him one way or the other.

So yeah, based on a quick google search, of the most mainstream, important, influential conservative pundits (according to at least one group of conservatives), the bulk of them explicitly attack his faith or try to negatively associate him with islam, atheism etc.  Which is itself a form of bigotry, like calling someone a jew as an accusation.

These conspiracy theories are definitely being promoted by the mainstream establishment, though often in a “wink wink nudge nudge” sort of way.  The only left wing conspiracy theory that got even a little mainstream was the idea that bush might have let 9/11 happen or (for the even more paranoid) had  a hand in planning it.  And I don’t recall that conspiracy theory being promoted at all by the left wing media.  In fact the conspiracy theory got as popular as it did because of videos circulating on the internet which didn’t get debunked for a long time because the mainstream media wasn’t talking about the conspiracy theories.

But yeah, any mainstream conservative conspiracy theories I’m missing?

  1. You forgot the one about President Bush being behind 9/11.  Oh wait. . .

  2. escapist767 says:

I just think it’s ridiculous that so many people think Glenn Beck is “important” and “influential.” From what I’ve seen of his show, it is 95% conspiracy theories. And I’ve seen quite a bit of it. My dad is always watching FOX when I visit.I’m not surprised that Huckabee refused to feed into the hysteria. I don’t know much about him and I probably disagree with a lot of his views… but he seems like an ok guy.The second picture you posted always makes me laugh.

  3. @TheTheologiansCafe – You are right!!! NBC, CBS and ABC and their news organizations nightly made overt and veiled references to Bush being behind 9/11…Oh Wait…Thou shall bear false witness against thy neighor. (Not was a typo)

  4. mommachatter says:

Conspiracy theories are like “horrorscopes”…fun to toy with and entertain but rarely accurate.  I remember my dad thinking that if Kennedy was elected that the whole country would go Catholic and the church would run the state.  I was in downtown Dallas the day Kennedy was killed and of course teenagers love conspiracy theories..and I had/have my own but it can’t be proved or even if it could I don’t think it would change the outcome of anything.  Things would still be as they are.  Obviously Obama convinced enough people in his state for them to elect him to Senate and then the people elected him president.  So I think we should leave what has happened as history and worry only about the things he does now…good/bad…right/wrong…black/white. Conspiracy theories only clutter the issues so why waste the time?ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox sell sensationalism.  They are a business like any other on television to sell entertainment.  I don’t put a lot of stock in what any of them say.

  5. You’ve got to be kidding!

  6. agnophilo says:

@TheTheologiansCafe – No, you just didn’t read the blog.@escapist767 – Yeah I agree with basically everything you just said.  Though I think huckabee is sort of the thinnest kid at fat camp, lol.@tendollar4ways – Heh, exactly.@mommachatter – True dat.  I remember a few years ago they were putting fliers on peoples’ cars saying that if kerry was elected he would outlaw the bible.  He’s catholic, lol.@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Full of… substance as usual.

  7. @agnophilo – I’m just reflecting the unreality of your posts back at you. You’re just seeing yourself.

  8. @agnophilo – That was a continuation of comments on GL’s site about Foxnews being banned in Canada because they have a law where you cannot be called “News” and knowingly lie. @TheTheologiansCafe – Was defending lying as news….but hey, he is a conservative. Lying is Kosher with those folks…..”Not” was a mistranslation it seems.

  9. agnophilo says:

@tendollar4ways – Canada fucking rocks man.

  10. I have watched Fox News many times (my dad has it on daily), and I can only conclude that they are a pro-GOP political organization. The only reason they’re so popular is because paranoid right-wing nuts like when Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity pat them on their heads and tell them they’re enlightened opponents of the Marxist/Communist/Muslim conspiracy theory.

  11. Thing that strikes me about conspiracy theories is people accept anything at face value. They are like sheep without a mind of their own and they do no investigation. I think the problem facing many is that they are so suspicious of everything that if the story sounds good enough then it just has to be true.

  12. agnophilo says:

@The_Eyes_Of_A_Painter – The news media, especially fox news and conservative radio, are also very good at playing on the biases and fears of people.

  13. The_ATM says:

You get like 200eProps from my for putting horse the band on your playlist.I actually agree with you quite a bit on this post. Conservatives have only Fox News and fox news really sucks most the time.

  14. The major media is liberal and they shill for the Democrat party. Why aren’t you concerned about that?

  15. ❤  now, why isn’t THIS a top blog.

  16. I heard his middle name was “Hussein” .. But it doesn’t prove at all that he’s a muslim and he has erased that name lol . But this post is amazing (: (:

  17. Sand_notes says:

You really did your homework. People are so dumb. How would Obama even get to run for president without a birth certificate? What do they think his agenda is, exactly? To sneak over here and try to take over our country with his Islamic biases without a birth certificate….and…um…hm, not very well thought out.

  18. George Will is too circumspect.  You won’t catch him making such statements.  It hearkens back to Wm. F. Buckley.  And I would say Rush at least is talking hyperbole.@TheTheologiansCafe – well said.  Rosie O’Donnell unapologetically bends the ear of all who will listen.

  19. agnophilo says:

@The_ATM – Yeah.  To be fair cnn and msnbc suck too, but not quite as bad.@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Fox news gets more viewers than almost all the other networks combined, they are the “major media”.  You pretend as though fox news and conservative talk radio are a newsletter with 20 or 30 readers or something.@lonelystrangergirl – As of now number 20 on top blogs and 11 on most rec’d : )  Thanks for the rec btw : )@fabolousclown – Thanks, though I don’t get the hussein thing.@Sand_notes – I honestly think the people who subscribe to multiple conspiracy theories are just having a fuck-nut racist reaction to the US electing a black president.  They can’t call him a nigger so they call him everything else.  Muslim, foreign, not an american, communist, non-patriot, etc.  This kind of vitriol is stirred up against any democratic president, but not with this kind of traction from the start.@wrybreadspread – The ones who don’t promote this stuff are the ones many people have never heard of.  Everyone knows who hannity, o’reilly, limbaugh, beck etc are.  Where are the walter cronkites?

  20. asrial86 says:

@agnophilo – we sure do 😀  maybe that’s why I was always so confused when you guys talked about news being full of lies…. I thought you couldn’t call it “news” if it wasn’t truth, or was total subjugation.

  21. yarnspnr says:

A very long time ago I realized that the Fox News pundents along with Rush and Ann have a daily contest over who can make up the most derogatory jab at President Obama or any other high ranking Democrat.  The rules:  It has to be a lie.  It has to make enough sense so that the Republican base can latch on to it and repeat it for weeks on end.  By the end of its run, a majority of the people in the US must believe it’s true. At month’s end,  the whole bunch gets together, runs the clips and votes for the winner, who gets to masterbate in front of all of them.  The Foxy public refers to this as “objective reporting.”

  22. agnophilo says:

@haloed – In america the “news” is more like tabloids.  Do you even have tabloids there?Fox news is even worse, they invent the news and constantly promote themselves as “fair and balanced” and “the most trusted name in news”.@yarnspnr – That’s about it : (

  23. I just don’t understand why everyone doesn’t love Obama.

  24. agnophilo says:

@howsaboutsomemilk – Or at least like him.

  25. YouToMe says:

Nice. Whether Obama is Christian or Muslim is irrelevant. They are desperately motivated by fear, racism, self promotion, etc.

  26. agnophilo says:

@JulieDeer – And cold hard cash.

  27. Mugo60 says:

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace – Only on planet Loborn is there liberal media!

  28. agnophilo says:

@Mugo60 – Nah there are partisan liberal hacks too.  The conservative ones have more pull though, both in terms of audience and control over their endless throngs of mindless zombie followers.

  29. @Mugo60 – Then planet LoBorn must be planet Earth.Earth to Mugo! Earth to Mugo!!

  30. Mugo60 says:

@agnophilo – Your so right, “border to border, coast to coast, across the fruited plain, with talent on loan from GOD, Rush Limbaugh!”I’ll bet a dollar to a doughnut, Loborn worships this oxy-moron. “The pig man”

  31. agnophilo says:

@Mugo60 – Wouldn’t be surprised.  I pegged him as more of a glenn beck guy though.

Speak yer mind.
