How The Media Distorts Reality.

Here are just a smattering of quotes from richard nixon found in about five minutes of googling:

“The second point is that coming out–coming back and saying
that black Americans aren’t as good as black Africans–most
of them , basically, are just out of the trees. Now, let’s
face it, they are.”

– Richard Nixon to Rumsfeld 7-11-1971
White House Tapes

(referring to italians) “They’re not like us. They smell different, they look different,
they act different. The trouble is, you can’t find one that’s honest.”

– Richard Nixion to John Ehrlichman
Source:White House Tapes

“You know, it’s a funny thing, every one of the bastards
that are out for legalizing marijuana is Jewish. What the
Christ is the matter with the Jews, Bob? What is the matter
with them? I suppose it is because most of them
are psychiatrists.”

“What people resent is this business of some colleges
pushing the blacks too far for their own good, making
them doctors and everything else….The racism has
receded, I think, but it’s there and it will always be
there….A lot of people are just as racist now, but
it’s not fashionable anymore–and I think that’s
damned important. You can’t talk about blacks like
you once did.”

– President Richard Nixon
Alone In the White House
Pg 110

“Do you know what happened to the Romans?
The last six Roman emperors were fags. . . .
You know what happened to the popes?
It’s all right that popes were
laying the nuns.”

“I don’t want to see this country to go that way.
You know what happened to the Greeks.
Homosexuality destroyed them. Sure, Aristotle was
a homo, we all know that, so was Socrates.”

– May 26, 1971
White House Tapes Released 3-2002

“You have to face the fact that whole problem is really
the blacks. The key is to divise a system that
reconizes this while not appearing to…”

– President Richard Nixon
Alone In the White House
Pg 110

But when I search for racist quotes from our current president, all I can find is a blizzard of out of context, deceptively modified and even fabricated quotes such as these. Yet a google search of “nixon was racist” yields about 1200 results and a search of “obama is racist” yields well over four hundred thousand results. There are in other words 328 times as many instances of people talking about obama being racist as there are of the most explicitly, overtly and well-documentedly racist president in US history.

“Nixon was a bigot” – 14 thousand results.

“Obama is a bigot” – Just under one million results.

I think some days mass-media should be reserved for entertainment only.

but…   isn’t the media doing all those in the name of patriotism?   that should make it okay, right?

  2. agnophilo says:

@maniacsicko – I take comfort in knowing that you’re being sarcastic.  Also, they do it in the name of nationalism and profit – patriotism does not involve spin and bullshit – that is what you do to knee-cap a democracy, not make it thrive.

  3. maniacsicko says:

@agnophilo – well, that’s according to you..  in my country, there are patriotism programs that instill that say if you give a profit making project to someone that is rooting for the opposition party (even if they have proven track record in such project) instead of someone that is rooting for the party currently (ever since our independence 50+ years ago, actually) forming the government (even when they are lousy at such project), then you are being unpatriotic..   that is actually one of the workshop questions, in the program that is compulsary to many government servant and students..i have gone thru the program, and not to jeopardize my chance of going abroad for my study, i just follow the flow and nod in agreement..   sad thing though, it seem that many sincerely eat those things up..  yeah..  and guess what..  the reason that they want to instill such mindset in so many people, is because they are being patriotic (in their own definition)..

  4. agnophilo says:

@maniacsicko – They are being nationalistic, not patriotic in the democratic sense.  And what country is this?

  5. So your argument that the media beatifies Nixon and excoriates Obama is…a Google search? And not even a Google News search? And it doesn’t occur to you that anything about Obama will return more hits than Nixon because…well…Obama is the current president and Nixon is dead? Or that in the age of social media a Google search is going to pull up a lot more than what most of us would characterize as “the media”? Or that the searches you made are going to turn up a whole lot of pages that have nothing to do with Nixon or Obama being racist? Seriously? Do you even understand the concept of a search engine?

It is because Obama’s black. Half black.

  7. agnophilo says:

@randomneuralfirings – “So your argument that the media beatifies Nixon and excoriates Obama is…”Not my argument.”a Google search? And not even a Google News search? And it doesn’t occur to you that anything about Obama will return more hits than Nixon because…well…Obama is the current president and Nixon is dead?” Which is why I didn’t base it on a google news search.  As for there being more information about obama than nixon on the internet, a search of “richard nixon” (in quotes) gets ten million results, and “barrack obama” gets 26 times as many hits, this is true.  But there is over three hundred times as much about obama being racist as there is about nixon, how is that not still grossly disproportionate?  Especially, as I pointed out, the vast disparity in the facts of the two mens’ views.”Or that in the age of social media a Google search is going to pull up a lot more than what most of us would characterize as “the media”?” Most of which is regurgitation or commentary on information from the mainstream media.  If I search “teletubbies” I will get a lot of information from private websites, blogs etc – to suppose it is not influenced by the mainstream media however is naive.  And bear in mind I did not say “mainstream” media, I said the media – websites and such included.”Or that the searches you made are going to turn up a whole lot of pages that have nothing to do with Nixon or Obama being racist? Seriously? Do you even understand the concept of a search engine?”Well since as is clear in the blog I searched for “obama is racist” and “nixon was racist” in quotes, no it’s not going to produce a lot of pages that aren’t about them being racist.  I think you need to learn a thing or two about how search engines work.  Or re-read the blog.

  8. agnophilo says:

@daavidd – I think the republican strategy hinged on trying to make open hatred of the man justifiable by giving people a wide array of things to hang their hat on – prime among them the idea that it’s okay to hate him because he hates you.

  9. Mikke3vArt says:

is it bad this made me laugh a little? i dont know much about politics only because its the same bullshit over again but these really made me smile.
