Atheists Are To Blame For Society’s Problems.

I just read a blog that was basically saying atheist’s (and christians who are atheists “for all intents”) are to blame for society’s problems and that if we just accepted that god was our “lord” and obeyed him everything would be right as rain.

I gave this response:

Yeah, as opposed to the 1500 years when we obeyed the bible and owned slaves and traded women as cattle.

I’m sorry, but the world for all it’s faults is getting better, any objective look at history will show this.  And part of that improvement is that we don’t consider anyone a “lord”, we actually debate over what public policy should be rather than declaring it by fiat, which allows for social progress.  If you want to know what the alternative is like, go to any muslim theocracy.  It will be like stepping into a time machine and seeing an earlier version of the christian world.

Do you honestly think the 50’s had a better culture than we do?  Or the 1800’s?  Or the 1700’s?

Do you think an age where rape was a crime against a woman’s husband (illegal use of his property) and slave rape was thus perfectly legal – do you think that was a more enlightened era?  The dissolution of labor unions is an outrage today – this was not even considered an outrage not too fucking long ago.

So yes, by all means feel free to “blame” the state of the modern world by comparison to centuries past on atheists.

My problems have to do with religious people. I could go into extraordinary detail about my problems with religious people.

  2. agnophilo says:

@liquor90 – Not all of them are bad of course, but I think most people (even religious people) can relate to some degree.

  3. Aloysius_son says:

I blame atheists for the world being round. If it were up to the church it would still be flat!

  4. jmallory says:

My favorite verse in the Bible is when Jesus went around complaining that people weren’t following him, while saying that they are destroying the world.Wait… I don’t think that’s in there.

  5. jenessa1889 says:

so true.   did you know that while raw numbers of murders and war deaths have gone up, so has population.   By percentage, your chances of being killed by another human or government are the lowest they’ve ever been in recorded history

  6. The idea that the world is getting worse because of rising irrelgosity is ridiculous.(This is TheThinkingPerson, btw; got a new account)

  7. everyone equally sucks.

  8. Women are still traded as cattle, and rape is still EXTRMELY prevalent, and most of the time women don’t report it…either because we’re too embarassed to do it, are unsure of what really happened, want to forget it, or some other reason. For the few who actually DO report it, very few go to trial. Usually they either drop it for lack of evidence (because, at least for me, by the time I was ready, there was NONE), and even if there IS evidence, it’s her word against his. He can say she wanted it or that she was asking for it. Oftentimes, the DA, especially if it’s close to election time, just decides it isn’t worth pursuing. Slavery, especially sex slavery, is alive and well world wide, and yes, even here. Even though it’s illegal. Point being, atheists aren’t solely responsible for destroying the world, or Christians, or Hindus or Muslims, of Jews, or Buddhists, or Agnostics, or whatever else you identify with… its ALL of us. People are destroying society and they have been since the dawn of time.

  9. That is the beauty of Faith though. The statement “atheists are to blame for all of society’s ills” can be proven wrong as you have but…if they have faith otherwise. They win.

  10. unflii says:

As I recall from my days as a Christian, Jesus said “Love thy Neighbor.” not “Blame thy Neighbor.” If Christians want to blame someone, they can either blame themselves, or the creator of all of society’s problems.

  11. There actually never been a time when any people have obeyed God for any amount of time. They always fall back to their sinful ways.God has nothing to do with it.It’s all mankind, not just atheists or any certain group. We are all one group of lieing, prideful, selfish rotten turds.I haven’t seen this post and don’t plan on it.I don’t plan on venturing out much but I do admire you though Mark even though I disagree with you.See,if man DID do things God’s way things would be perfect.Thats Christians and non Christians. It has never been tried because our sin always botches it up.If Christians think they have it right by blaming someONE,then that certain Christian should look at themself first.THATS where the screwup started. How are ya Mark?

  12. wobster109 says:

Good post, and good vision. I’m accustomed to seeing the things that are wrong in the world, for how else is progress made? Among other things, your post reminded me how very far we’ve come and how very many things we’ve changed for the better.

  13. Women are still treated that way today. Check out some of the Arab world! But I like a lot of the clear thinking comments. Make fact and science what you follow. We wouldn’t believe 2 + 2 is 4 if every other time we went to add up 2 + 2 it ended up 5 or 11 or whatever. Yet people believe these beliefs from early civilization still. Amazing.

  14. agnophilo says:

@Aloysius_son – Heh, good one : )  Rec’d.@jmallory – If anything he was pissed at the leaders of his own religion for their corruption and general full-of-shittitude.@jenessa1889 – True dat.  And I’m sure they’re lower in the more secular areas than those run by theocracies, though to be fair much of that is due to the difference between freedom and fascism more than ideology.  But it does illustrate the full-of-shittitude of the author’s claim (I like my new word).@AYoungContrarian – Yup.  I agree with you agreeing with me : )@raspberryjade – In principle, sure.@Semper_medusa – I’m sorry you went through that : (  It is getting better though.  It used to be so that a woman couldn’t even accuse her husband of rape legally (no matter how estranged), and in biblical times a woman was put to death (as instructed in scripture) if she failed to scream loud enough to be heard when being raped, because the burden of proof was on her to prove she was forced, on pain of death.  The world is plenty fucked up, but as hard as it may be to imagine it used to be much worse, and in the future I think it will be much better.  We’re creating an environment with support systems for rape and abuse victims so they feel they can come forward after an attack much more often.  It’s still ridiculous that pot dealers get heavier sentences than rapists though.  But there’s always work to be done.@tendollar4ways – In their head anyway.@unflii – That’s actually a big part of it, also why people blame the victims of natural disasters, it’s because nature itself can’t possibly be flawed according to their ideology.  Here is an excellent video on this if you’re interested.@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – I’m confused as to how you can say that the world would be better if we followed god’s commandments in response to a blog citing specific examples of how the world is a much better place now that we don’t follow many of god’s commandments, and not address any of that.@wobster109 – We tend to romanticize the past as though the 50’s really were just like leave it to beaver, instead of being a time when intolerable racism and sexism were still socially acceptable.  Just in the last half-century so much progress has been made it’s pretty astonishing.  Not that there aren’t throwbacks, but I’m optimistic for the future.@phillip111111 – Yup.  I agree.

  15. @agnophilo – You have no idea how hard I cried when I found that verse, because I didn’t scream. And anyways, it is getting a little better legally….but socially it isn’t. People say we’ve moved forward, but still…youre either a slut or a prude, and lets be honest, we are still seen as a life support system for vaginae and boobs.

  16. agnophilo says:

@Semper_medusa – Don’t for a second blame yourself.  I think people blame themselves because they think if they deserved it somehow then it was less of an injustice and doesn’t feel as bad, but you are not to blame.  And while many people are shallow and everyone has a sex drive, our character is determined by our actions, not our impulses.  If men followed their sexual impulses they would run around fondling women at random, but the vast majority of men suppress those impulses or they are outweighed by concern for the woman.  And the men who do rape women overwhelmingly aren’t doing it because they’re horny, they’re doing it because it’s a power trip or because they’re sadists.I can’t begin to appreciate how it must feel to have gone through what you’ve gone through, and I understand how you have to view every guy as a potential threat – but the guy who looks at your boobs when you’re talking, while he is probably a pig, he is most likely motivated by dumb lust and not malice.  I’m not trying to defend crappy behavior, just explain that not all men (even the sleazy ones) are wolves.

  17. whyzat says:

I’m o ne of those terrible atheists. I tended my dying mother-in-law (a Christian), I have contributed large amounts of money to veterans organizations, I bake goodies for people, I’m nice and some people even love me. Because of atheists like me, the world is just an awful place!

  18. @agnophilo – Thats the problem Mark,the world thinks it’s better off,but in God’s eyes it’s no better off,in fact it’s still in it’s downward spiral

  19. unflii says:

@agnophilo – Thanks for suggesting the video. Though I have to question the statistics presented within it, I do agree with most of the points it made. I especially liked the use of our lifespan as proof that human intervention can actually have positive effects. It is too often, though, that that modern medicine is mistaken for miracles. Because if something goes right it is god and if something goes wrong it is man. I do not understand why it would be useful to advocate such negative mind sets. :/

  20. agnophilo says:

@whyzat – I care for a disabled parent who is also a veteran and am an atheist.  We’re just awful people.@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – So if we brought back slavery and took away women’s right to vote it would be an improvement then?@unflii – Not just modern medicine, medical mistakes are even taken as miracles.  If someone is pronounced dead or given a terminal prognosis and lives they say “it’s a miracle!”  As though doctors were infallible and happy accidents never happen.  No one shouts about miracles when the person gets cancer though do they?  Or when person after person dies with no miracle.  Or when medical “miracles” keep war criminals alive to an old age, etc, etc.  But yeah, are you saying you don’t think there’s a correlation between church attendance and voting republican?  Toward the end of GWB’s second term when he had the lowest approval rating of any president in history (something like 13% if memory serves) gallup did a approval rating poll and asked people something like 22 demographic questions, age, ethnicity, income level, gender and so on – and of the 22 demographics his approval had gone down in literally every single group since the previous poll, except for one – frequent churchgoers.

  21. @whyzat – It is harder to be a good person like yourself when you have nothing to gain down the road by going to heaven or being rewarded by a God. More than likely you are just good, athiest or believer.

  22. @agnophilo – Come on Mark, thats two things man did, that was not something God wanted.God said to cherish women, women were to work along side man as a helper, and IF you had slaves(which then they were more of live in help) treat them with respect! When a Christian shows you who God really is,why do you get hung up on blaming God on the stupidity of man?

  23. And Happy Birthday by the way.Hope you have a great day.

  24. agnophilo says:

@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – The bible consistently describes women as an inferior subspecies which exists to serve man, while man exists to serve and glorify god.  You have no problem with this?  And as far as “respect” goes, women are to be bartered for money, forced to marry their rapists, or even just put to death if they’re raped and don’t manage to scream loud enough for someone to hear them.  Yes, respect. As for slavery, the bible forbids you from being punished for beating your slaves unless they immediately die under your blows (if they live a few days before dying though you’re not to be punished).  The only time the bible says to treat your slaves well it refers to separate laws governing the treatment of your hebrew or israelite slaves who you must set free after a certain number of years (or in some cases christian slaves) and gives harsher laws for treating your heathen and foreign slaves whose descendants you own forever.  American slavery was modeled directly after the bible where your white indentured servants you had to treat with respect, but your black heathen slaves you could beat horribly. You claim the world would be a better place if people followed scripture but you don’t know nearly as much about scripture as your average atheist.  Or you willfully ignore the bits you don’t want to follow.

  25. agnophilo says:

@phillip111111 – It’s not hard to be a good person with nothing to gain, it just takes transcending one’s ego and realizing other peoples’ feelings and concerns are just as real and weight just as much as your own.@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – Thanks.

  26. @agnophilo – The problem here Mark is you think the things that were done in the Bible by men were ordained by God.They were not.I know the Bible pretty well but not as well as I would like. There is no way to grasp it all at one time and in one reading. It takes a lifetime to understand. You see what you want to see from man’s perspective. When God created Adam and Eve they shared equal responibility. But I guess you see man as being given headship as some sort of task master over her.Not at all,he is to be her protector and provider. And the buck stops at him when something goes wrong. He is the blame taker.Have you ever wondered in Genesis when Eve takes the first bite of the apple. It says nothing about her feeeling naked. It wasn’t until Adam sinned and took a bite that they realized they were naked. What if Adam had turned the apple down and said NO,God said not to eat of that tree.Do you think man still would have fallen? I don’t know, but I don’t think so.But thats beside the point,he did and anyone of us would have done the same.Mark, you need to read the Bible with a little less hatred of it.You seem to acuse God of things man does.It ain’t so.

  27. agnophilo says:

@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – I know the difference between a historical description and a moral prescription in scripture, everything I was talking about is morally prescribed. And the “fall” never happened, neither did the flood or the tower of babel (at least the origins of language and almost getting into heaven part).  All of these have been debunked historically. And I should hate any book that advocates genocide, slavery and oppression of women and minorities just as much as you should hate mein kamf.

  28. @agnophilo – If you don’t mind Mark, could you give me thee references in the Bible where these things take place.I’d like to research them myself so I’ll be on the same page as you.But of course,if you say the fall never happened then what does anything in the Bible matter to you.If a history book gets something wrong does that mean the whole history book is wrong?Well, the Bible it does.Like I said,if you have time please give me the ref where all these terrible things God did happened.

  29. agnophilo says:

@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – “If you don’t mind Mark, could you give me thee references in the Bible where these things take place.I’d like to research them myself so I’ll be on the same page as you.”I want to point out first that you told me what these passages meant without even knowing what passages I was talking about.  You decide what the bible means before you even read it.I said the bible “advocates genocide, slavery and oppression of women and minorities”.Just some examples of each:1) Genocide:”Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.  And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.  And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.” (Exodus 32:26-28)”If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:  But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.  And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage…  If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying, Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known…  Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.” (Deut 13:6-15)2) Slavery:“Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.” (Exodus 21:20-21)From the ten commandments: “Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed.” (Exodus 23:12)Slavery based on race and nationality:”If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves. 40 They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 41 Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors. 42 Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. 43 Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God. “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.” (Leviticus 25:39-46)”But of course,if you say the fall never happened then what does anything in the Bible matter to you.”I live in a country where people are trying to base my laws on it.  If you lived in iran the koran would probably matter to you too.”If a history book gets something wrong does that mean the whole history book is wrong?”The bible is not a history book, it is many different books with different authors, literary styles, and a vast array of different sets of ethics.”Well, the Bible it does.Like I said,if you have time please give me the ref where all these terrible things God did happened.”I didn’t say anything about god doing anything.  I know before you even respond that I just wasted my time.

  30. @agnophilo – The slavery you are taking out of contextThe genocide part I will only answer in one way.If you have rotten apples (or other fruit) with other good fruit you get rid of it right. All other gods are from the devil and lead to evil so yes,God if protecting His people from evil.Since God know EVERY heart, even yours, how is he doing anything wrong?Of course it’s makes it convenient for you to say there IS no God and since you think there is no God why does it matter to you what the Bible even says.Just live your life how you please and ignore these silly Christian.I’m sorry you wasted your time with this but it was a waste of mine too if it’s any consolation. You talk about Christians being judgemental, you were quite judgemental in your reply to me.You did NOT quote any scripture for me to know where you were coming from. All I did was ASK and you tell me I didn’t even READ the Bible.Yes I read the Bible,I don’t read the Old Testament so much as it just has history of mankind and yes,it IS history dude weither you want to believe it or not.I pay more attention to the New Testament because it’s where we are forgiven our stupidity from sin because of what Christ accomplished,His virgin birth born of the spirit to show He was God, making Him not born into sin but also being born of a woman to show His humanity. He was 100% God and 100% man.He did not sin and WILLING gave Himself to be a ransom for our sin.Yes,what He went through for us for what WE did was just terrible of Him wasn’t it.You don’t know what love is Mark until you even begin to grasp this fact. But of course to you it isn’t fact,it’s a crock a bunch of silly drunken men made up.I wish you well Mark and hope you take care of yourself while you are taking care of your mom.I don’t plan on messing with this place anymore. It was nice knowing a bit of you.I pray God will open your eyes though to the real truth of His word.Bye

  31. agnophilo says:

@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – The bible could say rape children and you’d rationalize it.There’s no point talking to you further.

  32. @agnophilo – It has nothing to do with rationalizing but everything to do with where good comes from and where evil comes from. You sir are the one who rationalizes God away. And yes, there is no need in us talking about it any longer.

  33. agnophilo says:

@UnworthyofHisgrace@revelife – Says the man who just defended genocide and the murder of innocent people if they’re nearby people who belong to other religions.

  34. @agnophilo – I have no idea why God allows what He allows,I’m not God and don’t pretend to know it all.maybe just MAYBE you might think differently if you had been there in that era and seen the evil of man.Man,why do I even waste my time here GEEEEZ
